The definition of a Single Winding Transformer being an electrical transformer with a single winding, a portion of which is common to both primary and secondary coils. These coils share some or all of the winding. The single winding of a Single Winding Transformer is tapped somewhere along itself. The single winding transformer’s winding has at least three points of electrical connection called taps. Each tap responds to different source or load voltage. AC voltage is then applied across part of the winding with a lower (or higher) voltage applied across another part of the winding. The low voltage is connected from one end to a tap and the high voltage is connected to the ends of the winding. A Single Winding Transformer is generally more efficient, less expensive, smaller, and lighter when compared with a two winding transformer such as an isolating transformer, for voltages not exceeding 3:1. A Single Winding Transformer operates on magnetic fields that are time varied so they cannot be used directly with DC. One Type of Single Winding TransformerOne popular type of Single Winding Transformer is the zig zag transformer. This type of Single Winding Transformer provides a ground on three-phase systems that would otherwise not have a connection to ground. A zig zag Single Winding Transformer establishes a current path for all three phases. The zig zag Single Winding Transformer offers versatility and can be ordered as three individual, single phase, units or a custom three phase unit. A single winding zig zag transformer features two coils wrapped around each of its legs. One coil is inner and one coil is outer with each coil having the same number of winding turns, however, they are wound in different directions. Under normal operation, a zig zag single winding transformer would find the inner and outer coil winding's magnetic flux canceling each other out. In this scenario, only negligible current will flow in the neutral of the zig zag transformer. In the event of a phase to ground fault, the magnetic flux coils of a zig zag transformer are no longer equal to the fault line. Zero sequence current is then allowed to flow from the fault to ground and return to neutral.
